Job Summary
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Director of Finance is a key leadership role, integral to the organization’s financial success. As Director of Finance, you will take charge of ensuring timely, accurate financial reporting, strategic planning, budgeting, forecasting, and compliance with accounting standards. You will also play a crucial role in identifying, assessing, and mitigating financial risks, while driving transformative improvements in financial processes and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Reporting
- Provide oversight and take an active role in developing efficiencies for the day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, bank reconciliations, and the general ledger. Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and internal financial reports.
- Ensure the accurate and timely reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts.
- Provide strategic financial advice to the CEO and senior leadership team to support decision-making.
- Monitor cash flow and manage organizational liquidity.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Planning
- Lead the development of the annual corporate budget in collaboration with senior leadership and department heads.
- Provide ongoing budget management, ensuring expenditures remain within approved limits and identifying opportunities for cost optimization.
- Develop and maintain financial forecasts, aligning with strategic business goals and financial objectives.
- Prepare financial models and conduct scenario analyses to support long-term planning.
Strategic Financial Management
- Collaborate with the CEO and senior leadership team to align financial strategy with organizational goals.
- Lead the financial planning process, ensuring alignment with the organization’s strategic and operational objectives.
- Prepare and present financial reports to the CEO and Board of Directors, providing clear insights on organizational performance, profitability, cost trends, and key financial metrics.
Audit, Compliance & Risk Management
- Oversee and coordinate the annual external audit, ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of working papers.
- Ensure compliance with Canadian accounting standards (ASNPO) and other relevant regulations, including tax filings (e.g., T3010) and CRA reporting requirements.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls and financial policies to mitigate risks and safeguard the organization's assets.
- Ensure compliance with government regulations and reporting requirements related to the organization’s non-profit status.
Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise and develop the finance team, ensuring the team has the skills and resources necessary to meet the organization’s financial objectives.
- Provide ongoing mentorship, training, and performance evaluations for finance staff, fostering a high-performing team.
- Foster collaboration across departments to ensure financial information is accessible and understood by non-financial managers, enabling informed decision-making.
Fund & Grant Management
- Oversee financial reporting for restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring compliance with donor and funder agreements.
- Assist in the preparation of budgets for grant applications and proposals.
- Track and report on the use of restricted funds, ensuring funds are allocated and spent according to the terms of funding agreements.
Strategic Partnerships & Stakeholder Management
- Work closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and external stakeholders (funders, auditors, regulatory bodies) to build strong financial relationships and enhance financial accountability.
- Provide financial insights to support the development of funding proposals and maintain positive relationships with key funders.
Property and Facilities Management
- Prepare and negotiate leases, insurance coverage, and contracts in consultation with the Executive Director.
- Oversee the maintenance of updated lease agreements in the corporate filing system.
- Liaise with building managers and/or owners.
- Oversee the safety and cleanliness of the premises.
- Provide for the security of the property and the organization's assets.
- Provide leadership and direction for capital planning, including renovations as required.
- Oversee the management of building facilities and the facilities team.
Risk Management
- Provide oversight to risk management requirements, ensuring policies and procedures are in place to address these needs.
- Ensure the organization’s insurance coverage is sufficient to protect the organization.
- Oversee organizational contracts and vendor management, according to financial policies.
- Ensure compliance with all legislation relevant to the organization (e.g., BPSA, PHIPA, FIPPA, OHS, etc.).
Leadership, Accountability, and Authority
- Provide leadership and support for implementing and monitoring strategic, operational, and organizational objectives, fostering accountability and continuous improvement.
- Ensure inter- and cross-department collaboration to maintain a client-centric service delivery model.
- Serve as an ambassador for a healthy organizational culture, demonstrating integrity, positivity, and proactive problem-solving.
- Develop and implement quality improvement initiatives across all platforms to foster continuous improvement in health programming.
Other Director Administrative Responsibilities
- Ensure proper fiscal management in full compliance with the budget and directives of the CEO.
- Participate and present at Board, Leadership, and extended Management Team meetings, as well as other internal/external committees, with an emphasis on bridging external and community stakeholders.
- Contribute to the effective delivery of services and efficient administration of the organization.
- Preserve confidentiality and adhere to the organization’s policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline (required).
- Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience.
- Experience managing large budgets within a multi-funded environment.
- Experience in a Canadian not-for-profit and/or healthcare environment is an asset.
- Proficiency with financial software such as Sage 300.
