Position Overview

Sound Water Stewards is seeking a dynamic, mission-driven Executive Director to lead our organization into its next chapter of impact. This is a unique opportunity for a passionate and experienced nonprofit professional with a strong track record in fundraising, community engagement, and team leadership—and a deep love for conservation.

The Executive Director will be responsible for raising the organization’s annual budget—including their own salary—through grants, individual giving, and events. The ideal candidate will thrive in a collaborative, volunteer-powered environment and bring integrity, energy, and professionalism to every aspect of the role.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead all fundraising efforts, including donor development, grant writing, events, and campaigns
- Secure funding for the Executive Director salary and organization’s sustainability
- Manage day-to-day nonprofit operations (budgets, HR, planning, board relations)
- Inspire and support staff and volunteers through clear communication and effective delegation
- Act as the public face of Sound Water Stewards; represent the organization in the community and in strategic partnerships
- Oversee outreach and communications, including social media, newsletters, and media relations
- Build and nurture relationships with community leaders, partners, and environmental agencies

Qualifications

- Proven success in nonprofit fundraising (grants, donor cultivation, campaigns)
- Leadership experience in a nonprofit or mission-based organization
- Skilled in team building, volunteer engagement, and community collaboration
- Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills
- Deep integrity, humility, and a self-aware leadership style
- Mission- and goal-driven with a passion for marine conservation
- Experience with or interest in citizen science and volunteer programs
- Preferred: Completion of Sound Water Stewards training or familiarity with Island County ecosystems
- Preferred: Experience in nonprofit marketing and social media management
