SUNY Oneonta has an exciting opportunity to join our Division of University Advancement as the Director of Development, a key leadership role that helps strengthen philanthropic support and advance the mission of the university. This role provides a significant opportunity to lead a high-performing advancement team, including direct supervision of professional staff and indirect oversight of support staff and approximately 20 student employees through the Phonathon program. The Director also works closely with university leadership and the SUNY Oneonta Foundation Board of Directors.
In this role, you will lead strategic annual giving initiatives, enhance donor stewardship efforts, and oversee advancement services to build and sustain meaningful relationships with alumni, donors, and friends of the university. The ideal candidate will enjoy collaborating across departments, mentoring staff, introducing strategic program enhancements, and fostering a culture of philanthropy and engagement.
The Division of University Advancement works to increase charitable giving for SUNY Oneonta, strengthen alumni traditions and networks, and build sustained, long-term relationships that promote the reputation and success of the university. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Providing strategic leadership for the university's annual fundraising program, donor stewardship programs, advancement services, and the Raiser's Edge NXT alumni and donor database.
- Strengthening donor engagement by utilizing and enhancing a Donor Stewardship Matrix to broaden the methods and cadence of donor appreciation and outreach.
- Mentoring, coaching, and developing staff to cultivate a culture that supports innovation, professional growth, and purposeful program improvement.
- Advancing annual giving strategies through new approaches in audience segmentation, personalization, and multi-channel outreach, including Phonathon and Fund for Oneonta programs.
- Managing a portfolio of 20-40 current and prospective leadership annual giving donors with tailored stewardship, relationship development, and solicitation strategies.
Salary: $90,000 - $94,000 commensurate with experience. SUNY Oneonta is a Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) qualifying employer. Information on SUNY's comprehensive benefits offerings can be found at https://www.suny.edu/benefits. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising/development or related fields emphasizing strategic relationship-building or revenue generation (e.g., business-to-consumer sales, CRM-driven marketing, client relationship management, campaign fundraising, or client service operations)
- Demonstrated success meeting financial and/or engagement goals
- Proven experience as a department or unit leader and manager
- Ability to cultivate relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Professional experience using a CRM database
- Excellent written communication skills
- Experience supervising professional staff
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Valid driver's license
- Willingness to travel and work evenings/weekends as needed
Preferred:
- Master's degree
- Proficiency with Raiser's Edge NXT
- Demonstrated strengths in strategic planning and program development
- Experience collaborating with leadership volunteers in a nonprofit or advancement setting
- Familiarity with higher-education advancement operations and culture
- Experience working with and serving diverse populations
