POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
Leading a team, serving in a division, the Director of Development (DoD) is responsible for a comprehensive relationship fundraising program that supports the strategic priorities of The Salvation Army; while upholding and promoting the values, policies, procedures, codes of conduct and ethics of The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territory.
The Director of Development gives leadership to a team of fundraising staff, establishing and supervising performance metrics and fundraising strategy to meet the fundraising goals and objectives for The Salvation Army. A member of the Development leadership team, the Director of Development collaboratively leads the strategy to support funding priorities with long-term sustainable fundraising through relationship fundraising.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Leadership & People Management
- Supervise and provide leadership to a team serving in division promoting collaboration, excellence, and adherence to best practices.
- Provide guidance and functional team leadership according to strategic development initiatives
- Support professional development and performance management for direct reports and encourage accountability, and alignment with fund development priorities.
- Proactively support and raise the fundraising profile of The Salvation Army and its Christian mission, values and social services through a comprehensive fundraising program that secures Red Shield, donor directed, legacy and other donation revenue annually
2. Leadership & Legacy Giving:
- Lead Leadership & Legacy Giving fundraising, including strategies for systematic moves management, prospect management, donor cultivation cycle and stewardship
- Prepare annual plans for Leadership & Legacy Giving programs, managing established goals metrics and evaluative processes
- Lead fundraising efforts for capital campaigns, working with leadership and external consultants as determined in planning process
3. Mid-level fundraising:
- Lead fundraising efforts with strategy and supervision of Individual Giving (mid-level fundraising) that seeks to retain and grow donors at this giving level
- Strategically plan resources, donor touchpoints and moves management for those prospects for major or leadership giving.
4. Strategic Planning:
- Establish performance metrics, goal setting, an annual and multi-year strategic plan, for fundraising goals and objectives
- Supervise KPI’s for fundraising staff, coaching and leading an effective team and maximizing The Salvation Army’s investment in fundraising
- Review fundraising results and key performance indicators regularly
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
Governance Boards and Councils: None
Internal relationships:
- The DoD is part of the territorial leadership team for Development.
- Key working relationships with Public Relations staff
- Key working relationships with divisional leadership
External relationships:
- Strategic working relationships with philanthropists and community leaders
MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY:
- This role reports to the Sr. Director, Leadership and Legacy Giving
- The DoD is responsible for the direct supervision of a fundraising team of ten staff
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Responsible for managing the Development budget for the team
- Provides input to the development of new policies and procedures pertaining to the management and allocation of financial resources
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- May be on call; Overtime may be required to meet deadlines
- Travel may be required for the purpose of meeting with stakeholders, or off-site personnel/management.
- Ability to work in a demanding team-oriented environment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Post-graduate degree in fundraising or non-profit sector, with CFRE certification required
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
- 7-10 years of prior related experience in fundraising and/or organization management, preferably with a national/international organization
- Technical expertise in major gifts, tax implications for charitable giving, planned gifts and estate administration
- Demonstrated experience leading a fundraising team to meet and exceed its fundraising targets
- Experience in critical analysis of donor response and management
- Demonstrated success in the direct solicitation and acquisition of major and/or campaign gifts and legacy gifts
- A comprehensive knowledge of an integrated fundraising program encompassing annual, major and legacy giving
- Prior experience in capital campaign fundraising
- Experience in successfully recruiting, training, mentoring and managing a team of fundraising professionals
- Experience in the development of strategic and business plans and budget management

Benefits:
- Compensation: $94,660 to $118,352 with a maximum of $142,022.
- Work Arrangement: Full-time position - hybrid work model.
- Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
