Position Summary
The Communications & Engagement Manager plays a central role in advancing the mission of the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation by strengthening brand visibility, deepening community engagement, and activating volunteers and partners across the 52-mile Capital Trail corridor.
This position is responsible for executing cohesive communications, managing digital and print content, and leading volunteer engagement efforts - including the Trail Ambassador Program. The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller, highly organized, and passionate about connecting people to outdoor spaces and community initiatives. This position reports to the Director of Development & Communications.
Core Responsibilities
Communications & Brand Management
- Execute and maintain a cohesive brand across all platforms and materials
- Develop and manage content for social media, the website, outreach campaigns, and newsletters
- Create and oversee production of collateral (brochures, impact reports, event materials, etc.)
- Support storytelling efforts that highlight Trail impact, partnerships, and community voices
- Ensure consistency in messaging across programs, events, and development initiatives
Community Engagement & Volunteer Programs
- Lead and grow the Trail Ambassador Program, including recruitment, training, and coordination
- Manage volunteer engagement opportunities such as cleanups, community events, and activations
- Serve as a key liaison between VCTF and community partners for co-created programming
- Coordinate volunteer communication and scheduling systems
- Support expansion of engagement opportunities across the Trail corridor
Partnership & Program Support
- Collaborate with partners to co-create Trail-based programs and engagement opportunities
- Ensure programs are effectively communicated and supported through volunteer activation
- Work closely with internal staff to align communications with events, development, and Trail initiatives
Digital & Content Management
- Maintain and update website content
- Manage email marketing campaigns and audience segmentation
- Track engagement metrics and adjust strategies accordingly
- Support CRM-related communications and audience outreach efforts
Qualifications
- 3 - 5 years of experience in communications, marketing, nonprofit engagement, or related field
- Strong writing and storytelling skills across multiple platforms
- Experience managing social media, email marketing, and digital content
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with attention to detail
- Experience working with volunteers or community programs preferred
- Passion for outdoor recreation, trails, and community impact strongly preferred
Salary & Benefits
- Salary Range: $55,000 – $68,000, commensurate with experience
