About Us
The North Carolina Tenants Union is the statewide union of local tenant unions united in our fight for housing as a human right. Working-class tenants best understand their needs and how to build a housing system that prioritizes people over profit. NCTU works with tenants to build durable, democratic tenant unions. NCTU's member-unions organize grassroots campaigns led by directly-affected tenants to stop displacement, win critical repairs, stop rapid rent increases, democratically control their housing and strengthen tenants' rights.
Position Overview
We are seeking a values-aligned Director of Operations to join our democratic, member-driven organization. This role will be instrumental in building and maintaining the operational infrastructure that supports our statewide network of tenant unions. The ideal candidate will enjoy a workplace where their ideas and input will be valued and respected, and will bring both technical expertise and creative problem-solving skills to strengthen our organizational systems to most effectively empower our membership.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the transition from being a fiscally sponsored organization to independent 501c3 status, including:
- Managing payroll and benefits administration
- Maintaining financial records using QuickBooks
- Ensuring regulatory and financial compliance, working with appropriate legal counsel
- Oversee dues collection and distribution to local tenant unions
- Develop and implement comprehensive internal policies
- Coordinate internal committees, including research and tech support
- Design and implement systems for:
- Internal communications
- Support team coordination with local tenant unions
- Intake pipelines for connecting contacts with appropriate Local Tenant Unions
- Statewide database management in collaboration with organizers and leaders
Qualifications
- 2-5 years of relevant operational experience (additional experience preferred and compensated accordingly)
- Demonstrated bookkeeping and financial compliance expertise
- Experience in building and maintaining organizational systems
- Commitment to democratic organizational principles
- Ability to work independently while maintaining strong collaborative relationships
- Formal education is not required; relevant experience and certifications are valued
Location & Compensation
- Salary Range: $65,000 - $75,000 annually
- Full-time, remote position within North Carolina
- Proximity to our local chapters (Asheville, Winston-Salem, Durham & Raleigh, New Bern, and New Hanover) is preferred but not required

Reporting Structure
- Reports directly to the Executive Director
