Primary Purpose of the Position:
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement & Executive Director of the Winston Salem State University Foundation, the Director will provide strategic leadership and management of the university's philanthropic advancement relationships with corporations and foundations. This includes identifying local, regional and national corporate and foundation prospects for the purposes of creating broad engagement with the university and planning and executing supporting solicitation and stewardship strategies.
The Director will proactively engage university leadership, deans, faculty and advancement colleagues in identifying opportunities for corporate and foundation support and matching strategic university priorities with potential funders. In collaboration with colleagues across the university, the Director of Development, Corporate and Foundation Relations will increase impact for both WSSU and its corporate and foundation partners.
Additionally, the Director will manage a portfolio of 50-75 corporations and foundations and supervise one staff member (Development Associate).
Preferred Years Experience,Skills, Training , Education:
- Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred. At least five years of demonstrated successful experience in higher education fundraising, administration, or related field in complex organization
- Demonstrated success in soliciting and closing major corporate and foundation gifts; proven track record of writing and submitting successful proposals
- Knowledge of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies and techniques, particularly in the area of corporate and foundation fundraising
- Demonstrated knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for obtaining corporate and foundation giving program information
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and networking skills with large groups as well as with individuals are essential
- Ability to initiate and build relationships with prospective corporate and foundation donors, and interact via telephone and in person with institutional representatives
- Experience working with individuals at senior levels of business and industry
- Effective and persuasive communication skills, both oral and written
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage many projects simultaneously; attention to detail
